Mt. Springs' mission is to make brook trout available to all pond owners throughout Maine. We recognize however that this ambitious goal is no easy task. Our northern location and relatively short stocking season makes distribution in Maine a challenge. In 2005, Mt. Springs became the primary supplier of brook trout to Maine's Soil & Water Conservation Districts' trout stocking programs. We are pleased that our first year was a great success, thus moving us one step closer to achieving our statewide distribution goal.

Brook trout are a native species in Maine, and therefore can be stocked statewide. Customers are required to obtain a stocking permit from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife prior to stocking. You can download an application by using the link on this page. We recommend that you apply for the five year license, as this will expedite the stocking process in future years. Permits are a necessary process to keep non-native species and disease out of Maine. No exceptions will be made.

Maine Soil & Conservation Districts

Spring & Fall Trout Sale

(Overview)

Every spring (and sometimes fall), participating districts conduct trout sales for pond owners interested in stocking their ponds. Customers must pre-order trout prior to the designated pick-up day. A current stocking permit must be presented when ordering trout, and the permit must also be in hand when picking up trout. The stocking permit is issued by the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, and is the management tool by which the Department controls and prevents the movement of non-native species and diseases within Maine's pristine inland waters. On the pick-up day, hatchery personnel package trout into oxygenated bags on site for the customers just prior their arrival. Oxygenated bags usually last up to three hours, however we advise less time in bags whenever possible. The Spring Trout Sale is conducted in the month of May, and pick up dates are designated before March to allow ample time for customers to decide on orders. Free feed samples, and tempering directions are provided to facilitate the stocking of trout into your pond. We encourage customers to witness the packaging process, as well as ask any questions they may have.

You can print out the list and contact your local district office for information on pick-up dates, stocking permits, and prices. Mt. Springs Trout Farm is proud to be the supplier of brook trout to the Soil & Water Conservation Trout Program, and encourages pond owners to support their local Districts "not for profit programs" such as the Spring & Fall Trout Sale, and also their annual Spring Tree and Shrub Sale.
